Link building techniques

If you’re new to link building, here’s a brief explanation of how we do linking campaigns and what type of links we get.

Let’s start with an example. Let’s say your start a business selling stereo speakers. Thus, your main or primary keyword for the site is likely to be “stereo speakers”. Some quick research shows that the term “stereo speakers” gets around 254 searches a day on the major search engines. Thus, you want your site to rank well for this term to grab some of that traffic.

How do you rank your site for the term “stereo speakers”? While having on-page optimization (title-tags, content, etc…) is important, the biggest factor in ranking you well is link building. So, to start, we may write an article about stereo speakers with a link from that article to your site. The key is to have the anchor text be the words “stereo speakers”.

If you have a link to your site that is yoursite.com at the bottom of the article, that will not do you much good for ranking for stereo speakers. You must have a link that says “stereo speakers” pointing to your site. For example, here is a short paragraph about the keyword with a link to your site:

“Are you looking for great value, high quality stereo speakers that give you great sound at a great price? Shopping online may be difficult with all the choices, but with a little research you may be able to find the right stereo system for you room.”

Having the link text with your keyword is essential to ranking well for your desired keyword. However, if you have a bunch of links pointing to your site with the words “stereo speakers”, Google is likely to penalize your site. Therefore, you’ll want to vary the link text with keywords such as “quality stereo speakers”, “stereo speakers on sale”, “getting a stereo speaker”, etc.

The point is to make the linking look as natural as possible, as people would normally have the link text to your site in a variety of different ways. Even using links such as “click here” or “go to this site” sporadically is a good idea.

Another important part of link building is getting links from relevant sites or content. A link is viewed as much more important if it is coming from a page that is related to your site. That is why article distribution or blog writing and commenting is a powerful technique. Links from these methods will be on a page that is on topic and surrounded with good content and synonyms to your keyword.

Getting links from websites with high Page Rank (or PR for short) will help increase the authority of your site and raise your own Page Rank. PR is a method Google uses to show how important a site is. It is on a scale from 0-10, with 0 being the lowest and of almost no importance to 10, which only a few select sites on the internet have attained (like Google’s homepage). Your PR will rise when you have more links pointing to your site or if the sites linking to you have a high page rank. Though page rank does not have too much affect on your rankings, we still strive to raise your page rank with the number of links we get and the places we get them. A high page rank site is also crawled by the search engines more often so new content and products will be picked up much quicker to be displayed on the net.

Lastly, getting links from authority sites also increases your rankings. These include .gov and .edu websites that have a lot of PR, links, and popularity. Large sites such as Apple.com and Yahoo.com are also seen as authority sites. Interestingly enough, one link from apple.com was enough to shoot a website to the number one spot on Google for a competitive keyword. As you can see, authority links can tremendously increase your rankings if you can get links from these websites.

Link building can be somewhat of a technique and time consuming process. Though we applaud people who strive to link build and learn the methods themselves, we find many clients don’t have the time or resources to consistently link build.
